Take Me out the Ball Game...

This week was opening day for baseball and just so happened to tie in perfectly with this weeks studies... Baseball, America's Pastime!

"And everyone who competes for the prize is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a perishable crown, but we for an imperishable crown."1 Corinthians 9:25

In history, Javier started lessons 119 and 120 of Notgrass's America the Beautiful learning about baseball and the history of the game. We learned about Jackie Robinson, the first African American to play in the major leagues in the 20th century and his roll in the civil rights movement. We watch the 1950's movie "The Jackie Robinson Story" to learn and better understand what it was like to be an African American baseball player during that era and what he had to go through to break the color barrier.

The boys learned that playing games are fun but it is not about winning or losing but how you play the game. This week's bible verse 1 Corinthians 9:25 helped us to apply this when playing games for fun or competition. Fame and trophy's obtained from winning will perish but playing to honor our Lord will have a lasting win.

For music, we learned "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" along with the history of the song. The boys learned the 106 year old song and watched this video to sing along to.

I thought it would be fun to include Jacob in a baseball lapbook study that I put together. You may find a link to the PDF file here. You can also access it on the printables section.
